The term Web 2.0 refers to the second generation of the Web, which is generally centric towards APIs, AJAX and social use of the Net - such as social networking and blogs.

The term was popularised by O'Reilly Media in October 2004. It often faces criticism, as it is a buzzword which is applied to whatever happens to be new online, such as tags.
